Hollywood has cast their reboot net further back in time, as news arrives that classic 1960s sitcom Bewitched is set to twitch again.

The tale of a suburban witch will be given a 21st century makeover, with Samantha becoming a black single mother who just so happens to be a witch, and who’s married to a white mortal slacker named, of course, Darren. Much like the original, the series will apparently give some hocus-focus to how, despite all her powers, Sam still can’t compete with white male privilege.

If, like us, you’ve groaned at this news that Deadline has dropped, there is some hope for this latest in a near-endless line of reboots of beloved past series. The creator of Black-ish, Kenya Barris, and that series’ writer Yamara Taylor are behind the idea, and a pilot has been green-lit.

This also isn’t the first try at getting a new Bewitched off the ground. Ignoring that horrendous 2005 movie starring Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell, copyright owners Sony Pictures TV are believed to have tried a couple of times to get something happening without success. Third time’s a charm(ed)?

Hmm, we might just break out our box set of the original Bewitched instead. Now that was magic.

Meanwhile, we wonder if any inspiration for the latest reboot came from this…?
