The next anime movie from Studio Ponoc, who gave us the gorgeous Mary and the Witch’s Flower, is entitled The Imaginary.

It’s based on the English 2014 children’s novel of the same name by A.F. Harrold and Emily Gravett.

Here’s the official blurb: “Born from a young girl’s imagination, Rudger is a boy no one can see who lives in a world where imaginations can live and be eaten by others. The Imaginary is an extraordinarily touching and beautiful hand-drawn fantasy film in which Rudger and his new friends in ‘The Imaginaries Town’ embark on an adventure no one can see at the risk of the futures and fates of those they love.”

Directed by Yoshiyuki Momose, who’s worked on everything from the classic series Belle and Sebastian through to Spirited Away and the Ni no Kuni video games, The Imaginary is currently scheduled for a Japanese release in mid-2022. A short teaser has been released, and this is it:
