Disney’s string of live action/CGI remakes of its classic animated movies won’t stop at The Lion King, with The Little Mermaid another one on the production line.
Casting has commenced, and they have landed their star, with Halle Bailey of TV’s Grown-ish taking the role of wannabe human Ariel.
She joins a cast that so far includes Awkwafina as seagull Scuttle (well, the voice thereof), Jacob Tremblay (Room) as Ariel’s piscine pal Flounder and, if rumours are to be believed, Melissa McCarthy as nasty old Ursula.
Mary Poppins Returns director Rob Marshall is beind this adaptation of Disney’s adaptation of the classic Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale. As well as featuring the already-loved songs from the 1989 film, some new ones will be added with a little help from Lin-Manuel Miranda.
There’s no release date yet for this new take on The Little Mermaid, but the next Disney remake to look forward to after The Lion King later this month is Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, on October 17.
