With a prequel to the TV mob milestone The Sopranos in the works, fans have had many questions. Like, “Who will play the young Tony Soprano?”
According to Deadline, the answer is Michael Gandolfini – yes, the son of the late James Gandolfini, who of course played Tony Soprano in the HBO smash.
What a great bit of casting, that surely nobody can complain about? Not surprisingly there’s quite a family resemblance there.
Michael has been proving his acting chops in recent years, particularly with his role in The Deuce, so he’s ready to step up to such a big role – and do his dad proud while he’s at it.
“It’s a profound honor to continue my dad’s legacy while stepping into the shoes of a young Tony Soprano,” Gandolfini told Deadline. “I’m thrilled that I’m going to have the opportunity to work with David Chase and the incredible company of talent he has assembled for The Many Saints of Newark.”
The prequel will arrive in movie-like form, and will deal with the 1960s Newark turf wars between Italians and African-Americans. It will also star Alessandro Nivola, Vera Farmiga, Jon Bernthal, Billy Magnussen and Corey Stoll.
