Director Damien Chazelle is hard to pin down, going from Whiplash to La La Land and now to the moon, with his Neil Armstrong biopic First Man.

Ryan Gosling stars as world famous astronaut, who was the first human to set foot on the moon (or, just for the conspiracy theorists, a soundstage made to look like that big lump of cheese in the sky).

The story, based on a book by James R. Hansen, focuses on Armstrong and both the first manned mission to the moon, and the decade leading to the historic Apollo 11 flight.

Penned by Josh Singer, who also wrote the screenplay for the magnificent Spotlight, First Man also stars Claire Foy (TV’s The Crown) as Armstrong’s wife, Janet.

First Man lands in Australian cinemas on October 11.
