Mark Wahlberg and director Peter Berg, whose most recent collaboration Deepwater Horizon opens in cinemas today, have reunited for Patriots Day, another action drama based on a recent US tragedy.

The film tells the story of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing and focuses on Police Sergeant Tommy Saunders (Wahlberg), who is on crowd control duty on the day and in the aftermath joins the hunt to track down the terrorists before they strike again.

The all-star also includes Kevin Bacon, J.K. Simmons, John Goodman and Michelle Monaghan, and the film is expected in cinemas in January.

Patriots Day is the third collaboration between Berg and Wahlberg – before Deepwater Horizon they worked together on another fact-based action drama Lone Survivor – and the pair will team up again next year for the big screen reboot of The Six Million Dollar Man.
