The 74th Golden Globes kicked off the 2017 award season yesterday in a shimmery golden blur.

Jimmy Fallon hosted the event, leaning on the ever-expected Justin Timberlake cameos, impressions and Donald Trump jokes. Luckily the night was full of many wonderful moments that caught our eyes and made for a great show – here’s what they taught us.

Damian Chazelle will destroy all competition
He first created a ripple on the awards circuit back in 2015 with Whiplash. Now Chazelle has returned and wiped out records, with La La Land winning every single award for which it was nominated – all seven of them! All eyes will be on Chazelle through to the Oscars – and hopefully Emma Stone’s eyes are also on him so she can avoid this hilariously awkward moment next time.

We found our dream hosts
To announce the winner of Best Motion Picture – Animated, Steve Carell and Kristen Wiig shared their happy horrific memories from watching their first animated film. They earned most of the laughs on the night during their weird and amusing moment that left us eager to see the pair hosting in the future.

They honour ‘overrated’ actresses
The divine Meryl Streep was awarded the Cecil B. Demille Award for Lifetime Achievement and she accepted it with a gorgeous speech whilst also calling out Donald Trump for an unspeakable act without mentioning his name once. He has since fired back with harsh words, labelling the legendary actress as ‘overrated’ – however, the crowd’s rapt reaction to her speech suggests otherwise.

A film introduction can make us cry
Dev Patel and Sunny Pawar came onstage to present their Best Motion Picture – Drama nominee Lion, and for his first time on the Golden Globes’ stage, Pawar’s stunning smile and adorable introduction made quite an impact.

Even Tom Hiddleston can offend the internet
During his acceptance speech for Best Actor in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television (for The Night Manager), an attempt to highlight those who work for UNICEF, Médecins Sans Frontières and World Food Programme turned sour when the internet began to hound him over the way he did it. He has since posted an apology with true Hiddleston charm.

Barb lives
Shannon Purser became a colossal Stranger Things fan favourite last year for her character Barb. But yesterday during the Golden Globes opening, she finally got what she deserves with a homage to the great Barb that brought some much-needed closure.

Comic geeks dreams can come true
While Ryan Gosling jumped on stage to accept his award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, not letting the Deadpool snub bury his moment, Ryan Reynolds took the chance to get up close and personal with ex-Spidey Andrew Garfield, making for a wonderful Spideypool moment.
