It’s June 3 today, which means that it’s Repeat Day! It’s June 3 today, which means that it’s Repeat Day! Uh, sorry about that. Anyway, it’s a day to redo things that you’ve done before and totally loved. So, here’s a selection of great movies that involve time repeating itself. You can likely guess the first one – hey, have you read this before?!
Groundhog Day (1993)
You don’t get much more influential than putting a term into everyday usage. But that’s only part of Groundhog Day‘s legacy, for it’s also one of Bill Murray’s greatest performances, and a bloody funny flick to boot. Are we right, or are we right?
Donnie Darko (2001)
We’d love to present you with a concise treatise explaining absolutely everything about Donnie Darko, however firstly we don’t have enough space, and secondly trying to sort it all out still breaks our brain. But in a good way. Splurdle!
Source Code (2011)
All that time stuff obviously didn’t break Jake’s brain, because he came back for more in Source Code. This one’s a bit more time critical though – repeating eight minutes over and over until managing to save a commuter train from going boom now.
This is another one that you really need to go into with all neurons blazing if you want to get out without a cartoonish question mark hovering over your noggin. The mob uses time travellers to dispose of “things”, but one of their loopers, Joe, doesn’t want to have his loop “closed”. Perhaps they’ll need to “meet and greet” this individual?
About Time (2013)
Like Groundhog Day, this delight of a movie (assuming you avoid creepy stalker interpretations) proves that love and sci-fi can cohabitate. Domhnall Gleeson is, well, a bit of a dork whose love exploits would be lucky to fill a pinhead. Discovering the family secret at 21 – that the men can time travel – he decides to use the ability for the greater good. That’d be landing a girlfriend – but it still isn’t easy…
Edge of Tomorrow (2014)
What a super-fun sci-fi blast – and that’s not only because we get to see Tom Cruise die over and over and over and over and over again! He’s battling aliens and, being a persistent bugger, every time he carks it he comes back for more, learning extra intel on how to defeat them on each go round.
