Margot Robbie is set to become the latest star to take on the iconic role of Queen Elizabeth I.

According to Variety, the Australian actress is in talks to play the legendary monarch in Mary Queen Of Scots, with Saoirse Ronan lined up to take on the latter role.

Although the film has not been officially greenlit, House Of Cards creator Beau Willimon has apparently already been tapped to write the script.

If the movie comes off, Robbie – who has also been linked to a new Robin Hood spin-off Marian – will join an esteemed list of actresses to play Queen Elizabeth: fellow Australian Cate Blanchett played the Virgin Queen in Elizabeth and Elizabeth: The Golden Age, while other stars to wear the crown include Helen Mirren, Judi Dench, Glenda Jackson and Bette Davis.

Meanwhile, Lily Cole is to play the Tudor monarch in a new British docu-drama TV series that is due to premiere in the UK next month.
