Matt Reeves has been confirmed as the director of The Batman, a new take on the Dark Knight.

Reeves, best known for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and Cloverfield, will also serve as producer on the film, which will be a new standalone adventure for one of DC’s most enduring superheroes.

Ben Affleck, who played the caped crusader in Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice and Suicide Squad, was originally expected to direct the movie and the fact that he was not mentioned in the press announcement is already raising eyebrows.

For his part, Reeves comments: “I have loved the Batman story since I was a child. He is such an iconic and compelling character, and one that resonates with me deeply. I am incredibly honored and excited to be working with Warner Bros. to bring an epic and emotional new take on the Caped Crusader to the big screen.”

Reeves is currently putting the finishing touches to War for the Planet of the Apes, which is due in cinemas in July.
