It’s been a huge month in the universe of Star Wars with the home release of The Rise of Skywalker, but somewhere in a galaxy far, far away elsewhere, Mel Brooks’ space epic Spaceballs lives on. Here are a few things that we just love about the hilarious flick…
Is there a more imposing black-clad figure in the entire universe? We think not! Helmets off to the brilliant Rick Moranis.
DOUBLING DOWN. OR UP. WHATEVER!
One Mel Brooks is never enough, so luckily he played two roles – Yogurt, the all-knowing sage and keeper of the Schwartz, as well as the dastardly President Skroob (an anagram of ‘Brooks’) of Planet Spaceball.
THE FUNNY LIVES ON
Three very funny people who are very much missed, John Candy – Joan Rivers and Dick Van Patten – all brought their ‘A’ games to Spaceballs.
John Hurt makes a cameo, recreating a scene from 1979’s Alien… Except with Michigan J. Frog from the Looney Tunes cartoons doing the chest burst thing.
Some bloke named George Lucas, who’d made some little movies set in space, loved the script for Spaceballs. In fact he loved it so much that he provided some unused footage from his film and a cameo by the Millennium Falcon. Obviously Brooks wanted to encourage Lucas’ fledgling film career, so he used it…
All that marvellous Spaceballs stuff to buy! Except, erm, you couldn’t buy it. That Lucas guy didn’t like the idea. What a putzy party pooper.
(That’s the movie, of course, not merch…)
