Just in case you were too busy doing stuff over the weekend, here’s the rather creepy trailer for Marvel’s The New Mutants, which dropped at some weird hour on Saturday, plus a bit of bio action.

An origin tale of Wolfsbane, Magik, Cannonball, Sunspot and Mirage, the characters in The New Mutants may not carry the big name wallop of Wolverine, Magneto, Storm and friends, but obviously the hope is that this movie will help elevate them in the Marvel pecking order.

While the movie introduces the mutants in their pupal stages, they grew up to do big things in Marvel’s comics. Here are some brief crib notes…

The New Mutants - Wolfsbane

Name on birth certificate: Rahne Sinclair
Played by:
Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones)
First comic appearance:
This Scottish-born mutant possesses the ability to transform into a wolf – or somewhere between human and wolf – a state that is not dissimilar to a werewolf. When in this form she must concentrate so as not to lose her human grip and go full-on feral.

The New Mutants - Magik

Name on birth certificate: Illyana Nikolievna Rasputina
Played by: Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch, Split)
First comic appearance: 1975
Bio: This Russian-born mutant has the ability to teleport, while she’s also a rather handy sorceress. Mutation runs in her family, as she’s the younger sister of Colossus.

The New Mutants - Cannonball

Name on birth certificate: Samuel Zachery Guthrie
Played by: Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things)
First comic appearance: 1982
Bio: This Kentucky-born mutant has the ability to fly at jet speeds while ensconsed within an impenetrable forcefield. He possesses a strong work ethic and commitment to his career as a superhero.

The New Mutants - Sunspot

Name on birth certificate: Roberto da Costa
Played by: Henry Zaga (Teen Wolf, 13 Reasons Why)
First comic appearance: 1982
Bio: This Brazilian mutant possesses the ability to absorb and channel solar power. He is idealistic and impulsive, but is considered a close friend of many of his teammates.

The New Mutants - Mirage

Name on birth certificate: Danielle Moonstar
Played by: Blu Hunt (The Originals)
First comic appearance: 1982
Bio: This Cheyenne mutant originally possessed the ability to telepathically create illusions of her opponents’ fears or wishes. She then went on to develop magical abilities after some adventures in Asgard.

With a few nods to the BIG movie trailer how-to, here’s that trailer for The New Mutants, which is due to smash into Australian cinemas on April 12, 2018…
