Fragments of Fritz Lang’s groundbreaking 1927 cult sci-fi epic have slowly come to light in the decades since the original 153-minute version was lost.
Composer and producer Giorgio Moroder is the first to attempt a restoration of Lang’s masterpiece, adding new visual effects and a contemporary rock soundtrack featuring some of the decade’s biggest names – Pat Benatar, Bonnie Tyler, Billy Squier, Loverboy, Jon Anderson, Adam Ant and rock god Freddie Mercury. The removal of the silent film intertitles and a faster frame rate result in a shorter running time.
Although condemned by cineastes and purists, the “Moroder Version” eventually finds a loyal cult following on home video.
