A simple premise is transformed into a tense and terrifying nail-biter by director John Krasinski.

Set in the aftermath of an invasion by blind, spindly monsters that zero in on anything that makes a sound, the film focuses on a family who have managed to avoid being eaten by creating a silent sanctuary for themselves in a secluded farmhouse. Communicating through sign language, the parents (Krasinski and Emily Blunt) remain ever vigilant of the unseen menace, and have instructed their two children (Noah Jupe and Millicent Simmonds) in hushed survival strategy. But there’s one major hitch that could threaten their safety – Blunt is pregnant and about to give birth! Krasinski cranks up the suspense to almost unbearable levels – it’s less a case of if someone will tread on an exposed nail on the stairs than when– and the movie’s largely silent soundscape is conducive to some wonderfully effective jump scares. Don’t Breathe successfully manipulated viewers with a similar concept, but A Quiet Place trumps it as a superior and unmissable horror-thriller.
