The DVD release of Aquaman washes away the murky aesthetic of previous DC movies to deliver a vibrant fantasy adventure that resembles a submerged Thor, or The Little Mermaid on steroids.

The progeny of the Queen of Atlantis (Nicole Kidman) and a Maine lighthouse keeper (Temuera Morrison), Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa) has the power to unite the undersea kingdom and our world. Opposing him is power-mad sibling Orm (Patrick Wilson), who’s fed up with surface dwellers polluting the ocean and is preparing for war. To dethrone Orm and become the ‘one true king’, Arthur/Aquaman must first locate an Excalibur-like trident with the help of a flame-haired Atlantean, Mera (Amber Heard).

Although renowned for his horror films, James Wan is a skilled action director (see Fast & Furious 7 and his 2007 film Death Sentence if you need convincing) who ensures that Aquaman is dynamically executed and visually dazzling, maintaining control of a tsunami of CGI without losing the finer details. The sheer spectacle of this underwater realm is worth the price of the disc alone, plus you get Willem Dafoe riding a giant hammerhead shark as a bonus.
