Set in 1987 and a prequel of sorts to Michael Bay’s original Transformers (2007), Bumblebee delivers an imaginative origin story for the eponymous robot in disguise.

The Autobots and Decepticons are waging war on their home planet of Cybertron and when the Autobot resistance appears doomed, leader Optimus Prime sends one of his best recruits, B-127, to Earth to establish a new home base. Disguised as a rundown VW Beetle, ‘Bee’ winds up in the garage of resourceful teenager Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), who discovers his true nature and learns that the Decepticons are on their way, resulting in a race against time to prevent the enemy from turning the Earth into scrap.

Conceived as a spin-off feature, Bumblebee is easily the best Transformers movie to date. Eschewing the convoluted mythology and visual maelstrom of the Michael Bay films, director Travis Knight (Kubo and the Two Strings) reboots the franchise with a simpler, Iron Giant-like tale of a youngster and her robot pal – one that’s rich in ‘80s nostalgia, light in tone, and perfectly assembled.
