Melissa McCarthy’s ability to take on the full comic gamut, from the raunch of Bridesmaids through to the absurd in The Happytime Murders, has certainly put her in an enviable career position.
Her choice of interesting roles continues with the character-driven comedy Can You Ever Forgive Me? Based on true events, McCarthy plays Lee Israel, an author whose penchant for out-of-favour biographical subjects has led to an inability to pay the rent. She stumbles upon a market for letters from literary greats such as Dorothy Parker and Noël Coward. The more salacious, the better. Forging these letters is right in Lee’s wheelhouse, given her fascination with these figures and ability to take on their voices. She confides in fellow down-and-out Jack Hock (Richard E. Grant), but it doesn’t take long before it all starts to go pear-shaped – literally.
