The story: Aka Tow Mater: International Truck of Mystery, at least in our family, Cars 2 takes the focus off Lightning McQueen somewhat in favour of a plot involving Mater being mistaken for a capable spy. He and his shiny red buddy are in Europe for the World Grand Prix, however sinister types are sinisterly plotting to do sinister things that sinisterly threaten the existence of the event’s racers. Sinisterly! While many detour this one, we find the fish-out-of-water espionage story a whole bunch of fun – plus, it’s worth admission simply for Michael Caine voicing an Aston Martin-like super-suave, super-spy sports car.
“Long live lemons!”
The 4K disc: Another animated treat on 4K, and despite it being upscaled from a 2K source, there’s a marked improvement over the standard Blu-ray presentation at play here. Detail is improved enough to be quite noticeable, while the HDR treatment does some minor wonders, especially in the rather dark opening ship sequence, where small details previously unseen in the murk are now discernable. Brighter scenes excel, as do the rich colours of many of the cars – in particular those of the racing variety, such as Lightning McQueen.
A new Dolby Atmos track provides aural accompaniment. It requires a bit of upwards adjustment from typical 4K listening levels, but once that’s accomplished it’s an engaging track that makes all the right noises from all the right places – including some great fun usage of the height channels at times.
This is a single disc package, featuring no extras. It should also be noted that this is the international version of the film, so Mark ‘Frosty’ Winterbottom fans may be disappointed at the absence of his brief cameo, as was featured in the standard local DVD and Blu-ray releases.
