4K July 2019 - CinderellaIt’s a classic tale, and also a treasured animated Disney feature. This 2015 sortie by Disney into live action is also one of the most entertaining such remakes that they’ve delivered so far. So, how does Cinderella scrub up on 4K Ultra HD? Is it beauty, or beast? (Oops, wrong fairy tale…)

The story:  Do you need a recap of the tale? OK, here goes: Couple with a daughter are happy, mum dies, dad remarries, dad dies, stepmother and two stepsisters are cows, original daughter is treated like slave, she meets a prince, they eventually get together, they live happily ever after. Throw in some glass footwear and a few other magical touches and there you have it.

Kenneth Branagh’s sumptuous direction, and the sheer glorious look to every frame is what makes this take on the old story so fabulous to watch, helped no end by the lovely Lily James as the titular character, while Helena Bonham Carter scrubs up wonderfully as the Fairy Godmother. We never like disliking her, but Cate Blanchett is an absolute bitch as the stepmother – so, she fulfils her role more than admirably!

“Have courage and be kind.”

The 4K disc: If you revel in sparkly things then you’ve come to the right place with this lavish presentation, for pretty much everything that hits the screen sparkles joyously. From the opulent dresses to the splendiferous transformed pumpkin carriage right down to everybody’s peepers, the HDR treatment here is a glory to behold. Originally shot on film, the sharpness and detail exhibited by this transfer is ultimately quite delightful.

The audio experience comes via a new Dolby Atmos track. While it requires more of a volume nudge than most such mixes, the reward is in the swirling cloud of Patrick Doyle’s delightful symphonic score that results, sweeping through the height channels and enveloping the viewer. Standard surround channels see some appropriate usage, especially when magic is involved, and while there’s not a lot for the sub channel to do generally, there most definitely is whenever a pumpkin is in the scene.

This is a single, 4K-only disc release, so lovers of special features will have to implore their personal Fairy Godmother to conjure up the standard Blu-ray release for them.
