Demon hunter John Constantine escapes the shackles of five-minute “webisodes” in this latest DC animated release. But how does Constantine: City of Demons shape up on 4K Ultra HD? Is it worth hunting down, or should it be cast aside?
The story: He’s witty, world-wise, a good fighter and his soul is kind of damned to Hell. He’s John Constantine, master of the occult and demon hunter – except that he’s abandoned his crusade against evil. That is until an innocent soul is at stake, and he re-enters the fray to restore our world’s balance of good versus evil… More than just a selection of five-minute chunks sticky-taped together, there’s some 20 minutes of new and exclusive footage in this seamlessly edited 90-minute movie, and it breaks the relatively PG shackles of its internet sorties to get somewhat more racier (hello Nightmare Nurse!). Live action Constantine Matt Ryan provides the same character’s voice, which really adds to this journey into the same universe as another DC animated feature, Justice League Dark.
“This isn’t a bloody game!”
The 4K disc: Constantine: City of Demons hits 4K Ultra HD in an upscaled 2K presentation, as that’s the way it was made. Still quite the improvement over the Blu-ray visually, things are upped a very big notch by the presence of HDR. This really pushes certain scenes to pop more than some of the other DC animated fare that’s hit the 4K format. The included DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 sound mix makes its intentions known right from the outset, as a thunder clap sets the subwoofer thumping. It continues to have plenty to do throughout, and in all this is a pleasing sound mix for one that only uses six channels.
