Yes, that’s Emma with a full stop. But while this is unlikely to be the last screen adaptation of Jane Austen’s much-loved comedy, it’s certainly the most delightfully silly and sumptuous take on the novel to date.

The feature debut of the wonderfully named Autumn de Wilde (who’s made a bunch of music videos for Beck in the past), this class satire is basically a tale of growing pains and romantic missteps, all in the search for true love. The meddling Emma Woodhouse – played with almost cold detachment by the ethereal Anya Taylor-Joy (Split) – decides to play matchmaker with her student companion (Mia Goth) and the local vicar (Josh O’Connor), resulting in a romantic romp full of pomp and privilege. In other words, quintessential Austen.
