4K November 2018 - Escape Plan

Action kings Sly and Arnie buddy up in action-fuelled prison break thriller Escape Plan. It’s now arrived on 4K Ultra HD, but how is it? Should you lock it in, or try to escape it?

The story: Ray Breslin (Stallone) is a security expert who means it, man. He’s quite happy to get locked away in supposedly high security prisons in order to make sure that they work – and they usually don’t. His reputation precedes him, and he’s approached by a CIA representative to do his thing on a new super-maximum security prison designed for super-maximum risk inmates. However, things don’t go exactly to plan.

What can we say about Escape Plan? We’ll always happily pay to watch Stallone and Arnie doing their action thriller thing together, especially when the wonderfully ridiculous quotable quotes come thick and fast…

“Have a lovely day… asshole!”

The 4K disc: Let’s face it, prison life tends to be rather drab and grey, so any expectations of sunshine and rainbows is out of the realm of sanity. What’s perfectly expectable though is a good, detailed image – and despite Escape Plan being struck from a 2K master, this upscaled presentation looks pretty sharp. We almost recoiled from the really close-up shots of the movie’s two action stars, as you could basically count every little hair on their chinny-chin-chins. Despite the lack of abundant colour, the increase in visual dynamic range afforded by the Dolby Vision treatment (or HDR if your gear doesn’t do DV) really adds to proceedings.

While the video is good, the audio here is simply great. A storming Dolby Atmos track keeps the action right up in your ears, with everything from simple ambience to full-on rioting giving those up (or down) pointing height speakers a solid workout.

As for extras, The Escape Plan is one of those very welcome 4K discs that actually totes some decent features. As well as an audio commentary from director Mikael Håfström and co-writer Miles Chapman, there are deleted scenes and three decent-length featurettes.
