The fate of one will change the future of all.

The second chapter in the Fantastic Beasts franchise and the tenth film set in J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World, The Crimes of Grindelwald not only brings a French flavour to the series with its Parisian setting, but also pays a return visit to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

This time, however, awkward magizoologist Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) faces greater challenges than rounding up his escaped menagerie of beasts and the threat posed by the Obscurus. The Voldemort-like Gellert Grindelwald (a grandstanding Johnny Depp) is rallying his followers to raise pure-blood wizards up to rule over non-magical beings. Unable to act against Grindelwald, Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law, clearly having a ball here) enlists Newt’s help to thwart the dark wizard’s plans.

The Crimes of Grindelwald is a superior sequel that feels a lot more connected to the Potterverse than its predecessor; Dumbledore and Hogwarts notwithstanding, the sense of magic inherent in the earlier films makes a much needed return. The period detail is simply beautiful, the visual effects dazzling, the stakes higher, and the climactic confrontation between good and evil worth the wait. In a word, fantastic!
