G.I. Joe is back bigger and, happily, cheesier than ever in G.I. Joe: Retaliation. Ah, but how does it fare on 4K Ultra HD? Should you take it in with your eagle-eye vision or, like the Joe doll’s “realistic” hair and beard, is it flocked?
The story: Where do you go when it’s sequel time for a movie that was one of the most gloriously cheesy action outings of the century? Adding more action muscle in Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Bruce Willis to your cast is a good start, and it’s what they did here. Drafting in the writers of Zombieland also helped – Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who went on to the two Deadpool movies. Events pick up from the cliffhanger of sorts in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, and the Joe team end up being framed for treason. They must fight to restore their good, apparently not-so-secret anymore name, as well as dealing with Cobra Commander and his nefarious dealings. Cue a 007-esque travelogue and bulk explosions. Say cheese!
The 4K disc: Another modern flick mastered at 2K, the upscaled presentation here boasts both Dolby Vision and standard HDR treatments, and for the most part it looks pretty good. CGI is improved a bit over the previous effort, but even when it looks a little off it’s in keeping with the cheesy vibe of the film. Audio is a HUGE improvement, with a Dolby TrueHD 7.1 mix that’s simply mega. With an approximate explosion ratio of one per minute (alright, we’re guessing there), our subwoofer would have been grinning from ear to ear if it actually had a mouth. Extras-wise, an audio commentary from director Jon M. Chu (who ‘s gone on to bigger things with the recent smash Crazy Rich Asians) and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura rounds out the 4K disc package.
