It’s time to get actiontastic with the big screen take on the classic army doll sensation. But how does G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra go on 4K Ultra HD? Will it grab you with its kung-fu grip, or should you just let it slip?
The story: We hope that you’re not lactose intolerant, for G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra really brings the cheese. Cheesy dialogue, cheesy plot, cheesy effects – cheese, cheese, CHEESE! So, if you dig Big Dumb Action Flicks that put their emphasis on the “Dumb” then you’re going to love watching a bunch of the best soldiers take on a bunch of the worst baddies, as the latter aim to let loose weaponised nanobots – metal-chomping robot bugs – on Paris. Sacré bleu, can G.I. Joe save our derrières?!
“Technically, G.I. Joe does not exist. But if it did, it’d be comprised of the top men and women from the top military units in the world – the alpha dogs. When all else fails, we don’t.”
The 4K disc: Like many modern movies, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra was completed at a cinema-friendly 2K. As such, we get an upscaled transfer here. It presents the source material well, save for some of the cheesy CGI which looks, well, cheesier. What definitely bolsters proceedings is the Dolby Vision/HDR treatment, making the whole thing pop explosively – and also making us want to go to Paris! Sound comes via a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix, and while it has its moments, it did have us longing for a more immersive. more bombastic DTS:X or Atmos experience. An audio commentary from director Stephen Sommers and producer Bob Ducsay on the 4K disc is a nice bonus.
