The winner of this year’s Best Picture Oscar, Green Book is director Peter Farrelly’s biggest career detour to date.

The new film from the comedy specialist behind Dumb and Dumber and There’s Something About Mary is a biopic/road movie that follows a working class bouncer, Tony Vallelonga (Viggo Mortensen), who is escorting African-American pianist Dr. Don Shirley (Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali) on a tour through the American South during the 1960s.

From the outset, Vallelonga (AKA Tony Lip, due to his notorious ability to talk himself out of trouble) is portrayed as the caricature of an Italian-American club bodyguard, with closed mind and a racist streak. He is the worst candidate to be tasked with spending eight weeks in the company of the cultured Shirley. However, the Oscar-winning screenplay does a masterful job of gradually eroding the pair’s stark differences, and Farrelly’s astute weaving of comedy and drama results in a fantastic film with a message you simply can’t ignore.
