The big red dude’s second movie, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, hits 4K Ultra HD first in Australia, and we’re not complaining. But what’s it like on the format? Is it horny, or corny?
The story: Missed the first one? No matter, we get a quick catch up before the action – lots of action – begins. What was once a bedtime story turns out to be all-too real for a grown-up Hellboy (Ron Perlman), as a war between personkind and creatures of myth spills into our human realm after a long-held truce is ignored by one Prince Nuada, son of the Elf King. Luckily, of course, we have our own reps from the mythical side of things, although gratitude is hardly oozing from every human pore. Throw in big news for Liz (Selma Blair) and Red, plus a sweet love story for Abe (Doug Jones), and we’ve one full-on, effects-laden Guillermo del Toro action blast – with heart.
“World, here I come…”
The 4K disc: The phrase we used there, “effects-laden”, has likely already twigged you to the fact that this one’s an upscaled 2K presentation, as the original movie was finished at 2K. But that upscaling is good, with the picture delivering a lot of detail when it isn’t being overwhelmed with computerised trickery. As is often the case, the big winner here is the HDR treatment. This gives us the gamut of delightfully inky blacks right through to explosions of brightness at times that really add to the realism. Well, as realistic as a fantasy action extravaganza led by a big red devil bloke can get…
Good news continues aurally, with a new DTS:X mix delivering the goods. From subtle ambience to mighty roars, the full gamut of speakers gets its share of the sonic action, and it’s an utter joy to sit in the middle of.
Two audio commentaries feature on the 4K disc, one with del Toro, the other with cast members Jeffrey Tambor, Selma Blair and Luke Goss. Pop in the very nicely included standard Blu-ray and a bunch more bonus stuff is on offer, including featurettes, deleted scenes and a gallery.
