It’s the ’90s horror flick for kids that’s become a Halloween staple, and now Hocus Pocus has arrived on 4K Ultra HD. So, how does it shape up on the format? Is it magic, or tragic?
The story: Three witches who were hung in witch trials are reanimated centuries later, after teenager Max moves to modern day Salem. The trio have only one night to secure their back to life status – and Max and friends have only one night to stop it from happening.
“You know, I’ve always wanted a child. And now I think I’ll have one on toast! “
The 4K disc: Disney have certainly performed some magic on this native 4K transfer, as it looks like a brand new film. It’s a naturally dark outing both in tone and visually, and this is supported by HDR enhancement that balances this darkness with bright brights when called upon. Detail is great – you’ll be able to count the wrinkles on Bette Midler as she turns the ham up to 11 with her two eager witchy accomplices.
Sonically, unlike most of their back catalogue, Disney haven’t gone to the Dolby Atmos bank for this 4K update. So, we get a DTS Master Audio 5.1 audio mix that’s perfectly capable.
This is a single 4K disc release that features no bonus goodies – we guess it’s a trick rather than a treat in this respect!
