Iron Man’s back on 4K Ultra HD, shinier than ever in Iron Man 2. So, how does this instalment go? Off like a rocket, or should we knock it?
The story: As Tony Stark ever-so-humbly revels in the glory of being world protector Iron Man (hey, that chorus line is subtle, right?), he doesn’t realise that a new, powerful and bonkers (does Mickey Rourke know any other way?) foe is warming the jets to take his red and gold alter ego on. Luckily Tone has sucked some powerful friends into his orbit to help out, including Black Widow and War Machine. Unluckily, however, he also appears to be slowly dying…
“Drop your socks and grab your crocs, we’re about to get wet on this ride.”
The 4K disc: This is another shiny new MCU transfer from Disney, rather than the existing German one from a couple of years back. Much of what we’ve said about the first Iron Man and the two Thor releases applies here. HDR offers up a boost to the light and dark of the image that really pays off – from the darkness of somewhere in Russia to the sunny shores of Monaco. Grain is so fine as to be scarcely worth mentioning – we had to stick our nose closer to our 55″ screen than Mum would have liked (don’t sit so close to the television!) to even spot it at all. It’s a 2K upscale, so while detail isn’t at the premium that many would like, it’s still a great picture worthy of its place in the MCU.
Dolby Atmos rocks – and it does so here, from the strains of AC/DC’s Shoot to Thrill near the opening right through to the many action sequences within. All channels get a decent workout, and we especially love the oomph of Iron Man’s suit when it gets fired up.
This is another single 4K disc release, so no special features are included.
