The MCU’s Iron Man trilogy concludes with, appropriately, Iron Man 3. So then, how does it polish up on 4K Ultra HD? Is it “Ooh, shiny!”, or eww, whiny?
The story: Trying to deal with PSD after the battle of New York, Tony takes to building lots and lots of Iron Man suits, before finding a bigger purpose when somebody known as the Mandarin starts bombing all over the world – and much closer to home…
“I’m Tony Stark. I build neat stuff, got a great girl and occasionally save the world. So why can’t I sleep?”
The 4K disc: Bearing no relation to the previously released and apparently underwhelming German release, this all-new transfer certainly doesn’t let the MCU 4K side down. Yes, it’s upscaled from the original 2K master, but things look very good, with the addition of HDR really doing wonders. This film flits from very dark to very light, often in the same scene, and the HDR deals well with everything that’s thrown at it. Grain isn’t worth mentioning, so we won’t… save to say that the only time it’s noticeable is from intentional inclusion in “archival” footage.
If you’ve been keeping up with Disney’s MCU releases then it won’t surprise you – but should please you – to learn that this comes with Dolby Atmos audio. The sound spread is befitting of an action extravaganza, utilising all channels wonderfully. JARVIS booming from the height channels as if he’s with you in your viewing room is just one of many aural treats to look forward to. The score, dialogue and effects are all balanced well, and if you have to hear Eiffel 65’s Blue (Da Ba Dee) then we reckon you may as well hear it via Atmos.
As with other MCU back catalogue releases, this is a single 4K disc toting no extra features.
