Two decades ago, Cate Blanchett lit up the screen with a singular, striking performance in Elizabeth.

In Mary Queen of Scots, compatriot Margot Robbie dons the flaming wig embodying the Virgin Queen, bringing sharp focus to a tale about two titanic women of their times. In the other corner, challenging Robbie’s Elizabeth I for the reign of England, is Mary Queen of Scots, played by Saoirse Ronan. The screenplay by House of Cards showrunner Beau Willimon seeks to depict the common ground of these fierce rivals, positing them as kindred feminist archetypes surrounded by ambitious yet duplicitous men. And appropriately, it’s the performances from Robbie and Ronan that are the film’s crowning achievement.
