Pixar’s 2013 prequel to 2001’s Monsters, Inc., Monsters University, has arrived on 4K Ultra HD. So, what’s it like? Are you gonna want to touch this bad boy?
The story: Did you ever watch Monsters, Inc. and wonder just how Mike Wazowski and James P. “Sulley” Sullivan became such good buddies? No? Umm… Well, for the sake of typing something relevant to this release, let’s assume that you did. In that case, you can feast upon this prequel, which goes back to the pair’s school days where they were anything but instant pals, as the tale unfolds of how they gradually became the team that we know today while competing to stay in their scare class at Monsters U.
“Show me some slobber! Drool is a tool, kids. Use it!”
The 4K disc: A relatively more recent Pixar affair, we’ve a right to expect some amazing graphical fidelity and yes, this one gets top marks. Delightfully detailed and boundlessly colourful, it’s a fabulous watch, with the HDR treatment just adding more to the whole experience. Dark, light, in-between… it doesn’t matter, as this is the best that you’ll have ever seen Monsters University.
It’s quite likely the best that you’ll have ever heard it, too, with a shiny new Dolby Atmos mix having enrolled for the occasion. Crowded scenes especially benefit from the addition of height channels, while the general mix balances music and dialogue deftly. Surround channel use is often wonderfully playful, while the subwoofer chimes in with all manner of thuds and added bass (party!) when it should – providing you give your volume knob a bit of an extra twiddle over your typical 4K Ultra HD listening levels.
This is a single disc release that houses no extra features.
