One of the most loved musicals of all time, My Fair Lady, gets its chance to shine on 4K Ultra HD. Ah, but is it luvverly, or downright ‘orrible?
The story: Based on George Bernard’ Shaw’s 1913 play Pygmalion, you probably know it well. A pompous old snob who happens to be a linguist (Rex Harrison, who played the same role in the Broadway production) has a bet with another in his field that he can transform Cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle (Hepburn) into a “proper lady”.
“The difference between a lady and a flower girl is not how she behaves, but how she is treated.”
The 4K disc: It’s so pleasing to report that this transfer is most definitely luvverly. Sourced from an 8K restoration that was made for the film’s 50th anniversary, this is a truly stunning-looking picture, aided by Dolby Vision enhancement that makes everything shine just that little bit more. A natural film grain accompanies throughout, never distracting from the stars of the show.
The sound comes to us via a Dolby TrueHD 7.1 mix, which is mostly front biased, but uses the surround channels to add a bit of atmosphere generally, and to give the many wonderful musical numbers that little extra bit of oomph. Dialogue remains clear throughout – well, assuming that you can understand “pre-lady” Eliza, of course!
This is a single 4K Ultra HD disc release featuring just the movie, so there’s none of the wonderful collection of extra features that accompanied the standard Blu-ray version.
