With four of their last five movies being sequels, a new original Pixar tale was overdue.

Onward delivers a grand fraternal adventure in a colourful land of magic. Well, it used to be a land of magic. For while New Mushroomton may be brimming with toadstool homes, centaur cops and unicorns of no apparent fixed abode, modern technology has done away with the need – or want – for wizardry.

Enter young Ian Lightfoot (Tom Holland), a high schooler of little confidence, and his big brother Barley (Chris Pratt), who’s anything but lacking in the self-assurance department. It’s Ian’s 16th birthday, and his mother has given him a stick. It isn’t any old stick, however, for it’s Ian and Barley’s late father’s wizarding staff, which comes with a spell to reunite the boys with their dad for 24 hours. Things don’t quite go to plan though, with only the bottom half of their father being conjured.

Cue a Harry Potter meets Weekend at Bernie’s race-against-time adventure in search of magic enough to complete their dad in time. But, of course, the road is a bumpy one, full of perils – and a dreaded gelatinous cube!
