After seven seasons of Buffy and five of Angel, you’d think that Fox would have had some faith in Joss Whedon’s hit-rate. But space western Firefly was canned after just one series. Soon a cult phenomenon, Universal came to the rescue with this movie wrap-up, and it’s now on 4K Ultra HD. Should browncoats celebrate?
The story: Assembled so that even those with coats of other colours can understand what’s going on, a couple of flashbacks establish the story of fugitive River Tam, who is the axle around which much of this story revolves. A mysterious military assassin (Chiwetel Ejiofor) is on her tail, meaning that he’s also on the tail of the good ship Serenity, and its crew of rebels. To what lengths will its captain, Mal Reynolds (Richard Castl- uh, Nathan Fillion) go in order to save his crew – and himself?
The 4K disc: Maybe it’s a space thing, for despite Serenity hitting 4K via an upscaled 2K final master, it does look quite stunning – and it’s definitely a big improvement upon the Blu-ray. The addition of HDR helps the visual achievement greatly, of course. Meanwhile, a DTS:X soundtrack has plenty to get busy with, especially when spacecraft shoom gloriously around your theatre room. Speaking of getting busy, fans also have two audio commentaries to digest.
