The formative years of Star Wars’ much-loved scoundrel and smuggler, Han Solo, isn’t really a tale that fans have been clamouring for, but here it is anyway.

Now for the good news: Solo is easily the best new Star Wars film since The Force Awakens, with a focus on rollicking adventure and narrow escapes (including a full throttle train heist) befitting the title rogue.

We first meet Han (Alden Ehrenreich) and girlfriend Qi’ra (GoT’s Emilia Clarke) on his homeworld of Corellia where, following a run-in with a worm-like crime boss, he’s forced to make a hasty exit alone. Solo, in fact. After signing up with the Imperial armed forces, young Han meets his new best buddy, Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo), and a pair of criminals (Woody Harrelson and Thandie Newton) who will further shape his destiny.

Solo triumphs in the casting of Ehrenreich, whose bromance with our favourite Wookiee is the heart of the film. And it’s no spoiler to reveal that we discover how he acquired the Millennium Falcon from gambler Lando Calrissian (Donald Glover), and that the Kessel Run can be achieved in less than 12 parsecs.
