Boy keeps swinging…

Tobey Maguire makes for the perfectly dorky Marvel arachnid-guy Spider-Man in Sam Raimi’s 2002-2007 movie trilogy. But what do we think of them as recently released on 4K Ultra HD? Are they worth sticking with, or do they bite?

Please note: As we’re covering a trilogy here, it’s fair to say that while we’ve been careful, you still may encounter the odd spoiler in the write-ups for Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3 if you haven’t seen them already.

Spider-Man

Spider-Man 1 4K Ultra HD

4K November 2017 - Spider-ManThe story: As if life isn’t tough enough for geeky orphan high school outcast Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire), a school excursion sees him bitten by a spider. It isn’t any old spider, either, as it just so happens to be radioactive. Peter soon feels like crud, but then his senses – and physique – commence a metamorphosis that sees him turn all superheroic. Which happens to be timely, as the city has a new bad guy in the Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe) who needs to be dealt with. But who is HIS alter ego?

The 4K disc: This HDR-enhanced pure 4K release will sort those who quite like a bit of filmic grain from those who recoil at the slightest sign of “imperfection”. Which is an overcomplicated way of saying that this transfer is rather grainy. Hey, it was shot on film, not digital. If that’s not the greatest news for you, please rest assured that the new Dolby Atmos audio track is fabulous, with the overhead speakers used to frantic effect throughout.

Spider-Man 2

Spider-Man 2 4K Ultra HD

4K November 2017 - Spider-ManThe story: Ah, the life of a superhero – delivering pizza, failing uni and the love of your life engaged to somebody else. Huh?! Isn’t it supposed to be all glory and goodness? Welcome to Peter Parker’s world two years on from when we first met. With the Daily Bugle also labelling him a criminal, he’s had enough and hangs up the web-slingers. But when a new big bad in betentacled Doc Ock (Alfred Molina) appears, Pete’s conscience comes a nagging. Will he don the spandex again and save the ungrateful day?

The 4K disc: Another pure 4K transfer, the good news is that while there’s still some grain, it’s finer and much less noticeable. The HDR-infused vision otherwise is magnificent and very detailed. Meanwhile, another new Dolby Atmos mix never fails to help you justify purchasing those extra speakers and that upgraded receiver.

Spider-Man 3

Spider-Man 3 4K Ultra HD

4K November 2017 - Spider-ManThe story: Peter Parker’s life is in a much better place than when last we caught up. He and Mary-Jane (Kirsten Dunst) are a thing, he has study sorted and has come to terms with his Spider-Man responsibilities. Life is almost perfect – so, of course, something has to mess it up (we’d be in for a really bloody boring movie otherwise). In this case there isn’t just one big bad, as old acquaintances are reborn and the likes of The Sandman and Venom (Topher Grace) join the evil fray. Then there’s Pete’s sudden transformation into emo territory, and all that this entails. Will Spidey see the light again and save everybody agai- uh, once more?

The 4K disc: Unsurprisingly, this makes three from three in the genuine 4K transfer stakes. Again HDR-enhanced – we love HDR – there is is also still some fine grain present. Some will love it, others will have to get forensic for it to distract. At this point it shouldn’t surprise you that this too features a new Dolby Atmos audio presentation, and that it is senses-tingling good.
