A cool twist on the classic tale of Rapunzel hits 4K Ultra HD in the form of Tangled. Ah, but how does it present on the format? Does it gleam and glow, or does it, well, blow?
The story: We all know the whole “Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair!” shtick, even if we got there via pop cultural references. Tangled takes the basics – a girl with inordinately long tresses stuck in a tower her entire life – and runs to new places with them. In particular, out of that cursed tower! It’s all due to a thieving type Flynn Rider (not his real name…) who stumbles across the secreted structure while dodging the law, and so begins an adventure that will see Rapunzel finally venture out into the big wide world – and find her rightful place in it.
“And for that one moment, everything was perfect… and then that moment ended.”
The 4K disc: A computer-animated flick from 2010, the upscaled 2K transfer delivered here manages to improve detail decently over the previous standard Blu-ray release. The addition of HDR makes some scenes come even more alive, without ever overdoing things. In all, Tangled fans should be very pleased with this upgrade on previously available formats.
A shiny new Dolby Atmos audio mix is quite a treat to sit amidst, with some subtle height channel usage for effects, and bigger bursts of life from the many songs. Dialogue and the soundtrack bump together perfectly, with no clarity issues. Mother Knows Best is a particular highlight on this one.
A single 4K Ultra HD disc release, there are no special features included.
