If the concept of Alec Baldwin giving voice to a businessman baby intrigues you, then The Boss Baby may be just the animation for you. But, how does it fare now that it’s finally crawled onto 4K Ultra HD? Is it goo-goo gaga, or poo-poo caca?
The story: We are the babies. You may know us as ever-so-cute emissions machines, but there’s actually more to us than giggles, burps and tantalisingly ticklish tummies. For starters, we can talk, we just choose not to around you. We’re currently on a mission from dog – more specifically, puppies are winning the affection wars, and we just cannot have this. As such, we’ve sent an emissary into the home of two Puppy Co. employees so as to infiltrate the company and shut down their secret weapon. But there’s a bubble in the bottle, as their kid Tim is onto us…
“Cookies are for closers.”
The 4K disc: First, the fluffy elephant in the room… Why has The Boss Baby taken so long to land in Australia on 4K? Well, the distribution of Dreamworks titles changed recently from Fox to Universal, and they decided to give it a release locally. Great work – and we hope that Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie follows suit soon. Speaking of suits, Boss Baby wears a very snazzy one, which scrubs up in 4K a treat. While an upscaled 2K transfer, detail is quite spiffy, as is generally the way with computer-animated features. With its HDR infusion it really pops off the screen, too. As for sound, you haven’t lived until you’ve heard a baby’s “WAH!” from (in our case) nine speakers (plus a subwoofer). There’s also a spectacular rocket scene that sounds awesome. No extras feature on the actual 4K disc, so you’ll need to pop in the accompanying Blu-ray for those.
