Superman faces his most powerful foe yet – and loses?! Surely that title can’t be true! So, is the latest DC Universe movie to make it to 4K Ultra HD super-duper, or a party-pooper?
The story: From the revered The Death of Superman graphic novel comes the first of a two-parter (the second, Reign of the Supermen, is due early in 2019) – yes, they’re doing it properly this time after the abridged version of 2007, Superman Doomsday. An asteroid hurtles towards Earth, and it isn’t just any old space rock. it contains possibly the universe’s biggest cranky-pants in Doomsday, and he’s looking for some rampaging action. Metropolis looks like a good place to start, and as one-by-one the various Justice League members fail to best his fury, one super man emerges as Earth’s only hope…
“If there’s one thing I can’t stand… it’s a bully”
The 4K disc: Animation tends to fare quite well on 4K Ultra HD, even if the original source wasn’t created in true 4K resolution. That’s the case here, where even the relatively rudimentary DC animation style scrubs up nicely in this 2K upscale, with the addition of HDR giving it some welcome extra oomph, especially in darker scenes. Sonically, like the other DC Universe animated films DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 is the order of the day. While a step up to Atmos or DTS:X would have been pleasing, this mix delivers able thumps and whomps where required. While no extras are included on the 4K disc, the accompanying Blu-ray contains two bonus cartoons, a featurette, plus a sneak preview of the concluding part of The Death of Superman.
