Roland Joffe (The Mission, The Killing Fields) directs this powerful dramatisation of Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s meeting with an imprisoned government assassin, whom he believes isn’t beyond redemption.

Seeking amnesty in exchange for colluding with his former masters, Piet Blomfield (a snarling Eric Bana) plays a psycholgical game of cat and mouse with Tutu (Forest Whitaker with a fake nose), and the result is a tense and gripping political drama mixed with hard-hitting prison film. There’s a subplot involving a missing teenage girl, whose mother appeals to Tutu for help, but The Forgiven is predominantly a two-hander (it’s based on a stage play), giving both Bana and Whitaker an opportunity to shine. Indeed, Tutu himself has enthusiastically endorsed Whitaker’s performance.
