If you thought Hollywood was done with making you afraid to go back in the water, The Meg has a very big and nasty surprise in store.

Taking its cues from Jaws, this deliberately dumb-but-fun action-thriller introduces a new monster to the hall of fame: a 75-foot prehistoric shark called the megalodon – thought to be extinct but still lurking in the ocean depths. Rescue-diver Jonas (Jason Statham) knows it still exists, after a close encounter with the beast.

But it isn’t until a submersible belonging to the Mana One underwater facility is attacked by the Meg that Jonas’s story is believed. The crew of the Mana One – played by a truly international cast including Li Bingbing, Ruby Rose, Rain Wilson, and Cliff Curtis – begin a fight for survival and the protection of those in the monster shark’s path, including sun lovers on an overcrowded Chinese beach. This long-awaited adaptation of Steve Alten’s novel doesn’t disappoint, with director Jon Turteltaub balancing horror and humour in the finest monster movie tradition. Although you may be left reconsidering a trip to the beach this summer.
