The British propaganda movies of the Second World War inform this handsomely mounted dramedy.

A Ministry of Information copywriter (Gemma Arterton) lands a screenwriting job to provide a female perspective for an upcoming film, supposedly based on the true story of two sisters who took their dad’s boat to Dunkirk to rescue stranded British soldiers. The fact that the girls didn’t actually make it to France is the least of her problems, however, with a pompous actor (Bill Nighy) grouching that he isn’t the star, and a heroic US pilot (Jake Lacy) who can’t act in the leading role. There are also complications on the homefront when she falls for her charming, and married, co-writer (Sam Claflin). The making of this fictional film provides plenty of fun, along with a few moments of pathos.
