1999’s Toy Story 2 was Pixar’s first ever sequel, and it now comes galloping onto 4K Ultra HD. So, how does it present itself? Is it gosh-durned purdy, or just plain ol’ stinky?
The story: A front yard rescue mission for a discarded toy results in the theft of Woody by a toy collector. Are Buzz and the remaining crew going to take this lying down? No way! A little detective work and they’re off to save Woody. But he’s met members of his extended cowboy family, and also isn’t sure whether he wants to remain young Andy’s toy, or to be able to make lots of kids happy for years to come in a toy museum. Decision, decisions!
“Ride like the wind, Bullseye!”
The 4K disc: Like the original, Toy Story 2 is a fully computer-rendered production with an original resolution less than that of 4K. Once again, the big contributor to making this the best presentation of the movie that we’ve ever seen is HDR, the often unsung hero of the 4K Ultra HD format. Its extremes of darkness and, in particular, brightness, add volumes to how Toy Story 2 leaps from our screens. Just look at the sunlight in the yard sale scene! Beyond the HDR, the image still looks very good, and anybody upgrading from Blu-ray – or especially DVD – is sure to be impressed.
A new Dolby Atmos sound mix graces this release, adding extra dimensions to the sound – sparingly. Height channels are in use selectively right from the get-go, adding subtly to various scenes without ever going wild. Meanwhile, use of the surrounds is fun, and when needed for bass oomph, this mix delivers in abundance.
This release consists of a single 4K disc, with no extra features included.
