Transformers: The Last Knight DVD coverAfter ten years and billions in box office, the Transformers fanchise isn’t about to change its formula, and The Last Knight delivers pretty much everything fans expect.

The plot is a little more complicated than usual this time, involving a connection between the Transformers and King Arthur, with Merlin’s staff being crucial to the fate of Cybertron. The race is on to procure this magical object, and with Optimus Prime turned to the dark side by the evil Quintessa (Gemma Chan), it’s up to resident hero Cade Yaeger (Mark Wahlberg), an English lord (Anthony Hopkins) and an Oxford professor (Laura Haddock) to unlock the staff’s secrets and save the day.

All of this is incidental of course to the planet-smashing mayhem, sound and fury that is director Michael Bay’s forte. The FX are as spectacular and assaultive as ever, with more pyrotechnics than New Year’s Eve in Sydney. And this time there’s the added novelty value of seeing an esteemed actor like Hopkins joining the Transformersverse. If you thought King Arthur: Legend of the Sword was over the top, you ain’t seen nothing yet!
