Van Helsing 4K Ultra HD

Carry on Count!

As Universal go about separating the monsters for their Dark Universe, you only have to pop back to 2004 to find most of them banging about in the same movie – although in 4K, Stephen Sommers’ (The Mummy) epic fun-fest adventure romp Van Helsing certainly doesn’t look like a 13-year-old flick.

The story: Van Helsing (Hugh Jackman) is a legendary monster hunter who’s reviled wherever he goes. But when he’s faced with taking on Count Dracula (a delightfully campy Richard Roxburgh) and his nasty friends in deepest, darkest Transylvania, the locals – including Anna Valeris (Kate Beckinsale) – have little choice but to put their faith in him.

The 4K disc: While Van Helsing is upscaled from a 2K master, it’s the addition of HDR that really makes this transfer pop. With fires and innumerable shiny things throughout, this is a huge improvement over the standard Blu-ray. Meanwhile, the DTS:X audio is as befitting of a grand adventure as you could ever hope.
