Released on DVD Venom requires some suspension of disbelief – namely accepting Tom Hardy as a wimpy loser.

However, the burly Brit is a much better fit for brash reporter Eddie Brock than Topher Grace was in Spider-Man 3. Hardy also gets to exercise his comedic muscle in this origin story for the Marvel super anti-hero, who is best known as Spidey’s nemesis. And he appears to be having an absolute blast. Viewers will too after Eddie fuses with the title character, a gloppy alien symbiont lurking within the Life Foundation – a science facility that deals in gene therapy and space travel, and isn’t beyond carrying out experiments using unwilling human hosts. And when the real agenda of the symbiotes (which doesn’t bode well for planet Earth) is revealed, there’s going to be a Riot. Eddie’s ongoing struggle with his venomous alter ego – who likes to wisecrack and snack on human heads – results in the comic book equivalent of a Jekyll and Hyde tale, or a truly bonkers buddy movie. One of Marvel’s coolest creations finally gets the solo outing he deserves, and die-hard Venom fans get a bonus treat during the closing credits.
