Every DC fan’s favourite Amazonian comes to 4K Ultra HD in the latest DCAMU instalment, Wonder Woman: Bloodlines. But how is it on the format? Is it a wonder, or a blunder?
The story: Wonder Woman gets an animated origin story, as she helps a young girl who’s been co-opted by the nefarious – their name is a dead giveaway – Villainy Inc. They have plans to invade Wonder Woman’s home of Themyscira, but the cabal of nasty types need to be prepared for one epic battle…
“If there’s one thing Amazons know, it’s how to fight a war… and it’s time to fight.”
The 4K disc: A pattern has been well established by now when it comes to 4K Ultra HD DC Animated Movie Universe releases, and this one doesn’t veer from the script. A solid 2K upscale includes HDR enhancement, and it’s the latter feature that really makes this release shine visually – quite literally. Right from the opening alien arrival the extremes of brightness that we see add so much to the experience over the standard Blu-ray release. Audio, meanwhile, comes via the tried-and-true DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 format. Dialogue is clear even in the movie’s noisier moments, and there’s some appropriate and pleasing use of the surround channels throughout.
No extras feature on the 4K disc, however the standard Blu-ray is thoughtfully included, and amongst other things it delivers the Neil Gaiman Death short, a Cheetah featurette, a sneak peek at the upcoming Superman: Red Son and a couple of cartoons from the DC vaults.
