Dame Diana Rigg – the Queen Of Thorns on Game of Thrones – has joined the cast of the British TV hit Victoria.
Filming has just begun on the second season of the show, which follows the life of the young Queen Victoria (once again played by former Doctor Who assistant Jenna Coleman) and her husband Prince Albert (Tom Hughes, The Game).
Rigg, who first found fame with the cult TV show Avengers, plays the formidable Lady Olenna Tyrell on GoT and in Victoria she will play the similarly plain-speaking Duchess of Bucchleuch, the young Queen’s new Mistress of the Robes.
The second series – eight episodes plus a feature length Christmas special – will see Queen Victoria leaning to balance her responsibilities as both a parent and Queen.
Creator Daisy Goodwin says: “Victoria is the only Queen Regnant to marry and give birth while on the throne and the challenges of being head of state as well as a wife and mother are legion. In many ways Victoria’s dilemma is a modern one – how do you have a successful marriage and a happy family.”
