Swedish actor Michael Nyqvist, star of the original The Girl… trilogy of movies alongside Noomi Rapace, has died at age 56, following a fight against lung cancer.
His family made a statement in Swedish, which essentially translates to: “Today we have the sad news to announce that actor and writer Michael Nyqvist died on Tuesday, June 27, 2017 after a time of illness. Michael Nyqvist was 56 years old and will leave a big gap. The family is asking to mourn in silence.”
While starring in many TV and movie roles in his native Sweden, it was the Millennium trilogy – The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest – that really brought Nyqvist (born Rolf Åke Mikael Nyqvist) to the attention of moviegoers worldwide.
This led to Hollywood roles, usually as a bad guy – after all, he did it so well! These included playing Kurt ‘Cobalt’ Hendricks opposite Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and, of course, vicious Russian crime boss Viggo Tarasov in John Wick, opposite Keanu Reeves.
There was, however, more to his body of work, including 2004’s Academy Award-nominated ‘Best Foreign Film’ As It Is in Heaven, in which he played the lead role of a musical conductor Daniel Daréus.
Nyqvist had recently finished filming the role of Captain Sergi Andropoyov alongside Gerard Butler, Gary Oldman, Willem Dafoe and Common in director Donovan Marsh’s forthcoming Hunter Killer.
Vale Michael Nyqvist.
